11 Easy Swaps Towards a Zero Waste Kitchen

Making small, sustainable changes in your kitchen can add up to big environmental benefits! If you’re looking to reduce plastic, cut waste, and create a more eco-friendly kitchen without sacrificing convenience, you’re in the right place. We’ve put together 11 easy swaps that’ll help you move toward a greener kitchen. Let’s get started with the easiest, plastic-free changes you can make.

If you’re more visual, check this quick video our founder Tanya did a couple years ago - it’s an oldie but goodie!

1. Home Compostable Garbage Bags

Say goodbye to plastic garbage bags that don’t break down in landfills. Opt for home compostable bags instead! These eco-friendly bags are made from plant-based materials and are perfect for composting. They will decompose naturally, unlike plastic bags, which only contribute to landfill waste and stop the contents from actually decomposing, too.

2. Silicone Bags Instead of Plastic Ziplocs

Out with the old, single-use plastic Ziploc bags, and in with silicone bags. These are way sturdier, last a lifetime, and can be reused over and over again. From storing leftovers to packing snacks for the kids, silicone bags are a much more sustainable and practical solution, not to mention the reduction in toxic exposure.

3. Beeswax Wraps

Ditch the plastic cling wrap for beeswax wraps! Not only are they reusable, but they also keep your food fresh without the environmental guilt. And if you're in a pinch, you can simply cover your leftover food with a plate instead of using plastic. Easy and eco-friendly!

4. Stainless Steel Straws

We’ve all heard about the impact of single-use plastic straws, and by now, most of us are straw savvy. But to really take your eco-game up a notch, grab yourself some stainless steel straws. They’re durable, reusable, and will last a lifetime, helping to reduce plastic waste.

5. Keep Your Jars!

Instead of throwing out all those glass jars, reuse them! They’re perfect for storing nuts, seeds, and leftovers, and they make excellent organizers in your pantry. Don’t let those jars go to waste – put them to good use!

6. Plastic-Free Paper Towels

If you’re still using paper towels wrapped in plastic, it’s time for a change! Look for plastic-free versions of paper towels that are compostable and made from recycled materials. A small change, but one that can make a big difference.

7. Glass refillable hand soap

Why buy hand soap in plastic bottles every time? Instead, choose a refillable glass bottle. You can refill it at a local dispensary, or have just-add-water cleaning tabs delivered to your door, cutting down on plastic packaging and ensuring you never run out of eco-friendly cleaning supplies.

8. Refillable Dish Soap Bottles

Just like the hand wash, you can go to fillery or get yourself some plastic-free just-add-water tablets.

9. DIY Surface Spray

Make your own surface cleaner using natural ingredients like vinegar, water, and a few drops of essential oils. Store it in a glass bottle to avoid plastic. You’ll save money and have complete control over the ingredients you use, all while being kind to the planet.

10. Wooden Dish Brush

Make the swap to a wooden dish brush with natural bristles. This sustainable alternative to plastic dish brushes is built to last and works wonders on tough grease. Plus, once the brush gets worn out, just toss the head (it’s compostable!) and replace it. Simple, effective, and eco-friendly!

11. Bamboo (reusable) cloth!

A lot of those disposable dishcloths are shedding microplastics down the drain and into our waterways. The good news is you can swap them out for reusable and washable bamboo cloths. These cloths last for ages, are incredibly absorbent, and are much better for the planet. Not only are you reducing plastic waste, but you're also making an eco-friendly choice that keeps your kitchen clean and fresh.

Small Changes, Big Impact

Each one of these simple swaps will help you take steps toward a more sustainable kitchen and a cleaner planet. Whether it’s replacing plastic wrap or switching to reusable silicone bags, the little changes you make every day can have a lasting effect. Next time you’re doing your shopping, think of these swaps—your kitchen, your wallet, and the planet will thank you!
